I think that "we could land" would be a better response, since it would sound better. If we say, "If they were able to land a man on the moon, why can we not fix this stapler.",the meaning of 'they' would be unclear and the listener would feel doubtful about who 'they' refers to. On the other hand, if we say, "If we could land a man on the moon, why can we not fix this stapler.", it will sound much better and the listener will be clear about the message of the speaker. Hence, Option A is the correct answer. I would like SOF to rectify this error immediately.
