ISO Class 3, 4 and 5 Decoded: What Previous Year Papers Reveal and How to Prepare
Is your child appearing for the SOF International Science Olympiad (ISO) in Class 3, 4 or 5? Then here is something most parents don't realise: the ISO paper tests far more than textbook science. It checks how well a child reads, observes, reasons and spots the one tricky word in a question.
We studied the latest ISO previous year papers for Classes 3, 4 and 5 question by question. This guide shares what the paper looks like, the science topics that appear in every class, the puzzle-style formats children must get used to, and simple ways you can help your child prepare at home.

Two things stand out. Science makes up most of the paper, so strong concepts matter most. And the jump from Class 4 to Class 5 is big: 15 more questions, double the reasoning questions, and noticeably harder science. Class 5 students need extra practice with speed.
Science topics that appear in every class
These eight topic areas came up in Class 3, Class 4 and Class 5 alike. If your child is strong in these, a large part of the ISO paper is covered.

The solar system appeared two to four times in every paper, often in creative forms such as riddles, unscrambled planet names and tick-mark tables. Make it your child's favourite topic! |
Science, served as a puzzle
This is what makes ISO different from a school test. Many questions hide a simple science fact inside a word game or a diagram. Children who know the answer can still get stuck on the format, so these are worth practising.
Unscramble the word. Letters like SRETHAEF must become FEATHERS before the science question can even begin.
Strike out alternate letters. A jumbled line of letters hides a science word.
Word grids and word-chop tables. Children find hidden science words in a grid of letters.
Riddles. "I have a long tail… when I get near the Sun, I shine bright." (A comet.)
Venn diagrams. Find what belongs to both circles, such as a flightless bird that builds nests with pebbles (the penguin).
True/false tables and match-the-columns. One wrong judgement changes the whole option.
Experiment and diagram questions. Reading a plant experiment, the parts of an egg, a soil profile or Moon positions.

|
Starting from the first letter, strike out every alternate letter to find an item in a first aid box: B T G H S E V R P M Q O F M W E B T S E N R M |
|

Notice the two steps. The science is easy; the puzzle is what takes time. Practice makes these formats quick.
Logical Reasoning: easy marks if practised
The reasoning section opens the paper, and its question types repeat across classes:
Mirror and water images of words and pictures
Embedded figures: finding a small shape hidden in a bigger figure
Word formation: making a word from given letters, or spotting a word that cannot be made
Number patterns in grids and figures
Symmetry, counting lines, and time on clocks in Classes 3 and 4
Coding, directions, blood relations, Venn diagrams and dictionary order in Class 5
These questions follow fixed methods. A child who has practised 20 to 30 of each type usually answers them quickly and correctly, which saves precious time for the science section.
7 ways parents can help at home
Teach the "INCORRECT" habit. Many ISO questions ask for the INCORRECT statement, the odd one out or what is NOT true. Ask your child to underline these words before answering. This one habit saves many marks.
Build a science spelling list. Unscramble and word-grid questions only work if your child can spell words like evaporation, transpiration, camouflage and hibernation. Ten minutes of spelling practice a day helps.
Turn daily life into science. Talk about why a puddle dries up, why oil and water don't mix, why a pressure cooker whistles, or which foods give energy. ISO questions are full of such everyday examples.
Read diagrams together. Look at labelled pictures of the egg, the soil layers, the human skeleton and the Moon's phases. Ask your child to point to and name each part.
Make a facts notebook. ISO also asks quick general-science facts: Hindi names of planets, the first synthetic fibre, when Van Mahotsav is celebrated, which planet is the hottest. Collect these in one notebook for revision.
Practise previous year papers. They show the exact style and level of ISO questions. Solve at least a few under a timer.
Review every mistake. After each test, ask: did I not know the fact, or did I misread the question? The answer tells you what to practise next.

ISO Class 3 |
Observation. Picture-based questions on animals and their eating habits, birds and their nests, plants and their uses, food, professions and their tools, road signs and map symbols. |
Help your child name things around them and explain what they are used for. |
|
ISO Class 4 |
Deeper concepts: states of matter, adaptations of plants and animals, the Moon's phases, simple machines, teeth and digestion, and first aid. Experiment-based questions start appearing, such as leaves covered with petroleum jelly. |
Encourage your child to ask "why" about each fact. |
|
ISO Class 5 |
A longer, more detailed paper: soil layers, rocks, levers, layers of the Earth, the atmosphere, seed germination, muscles and joints, pollution and planets. Many questions combine several facts in one. |
Plan wide revision and plenty of timed practice. |
Frequently asked questions
Is ISO the same as NSO? Yes. SOF's Science Olympiad, earlier called NSO, has been renamed ISO this year. Previous year papers from the NSO years are still the best practice material.
How many questions are there in the ISO paper for Classes 3, 4 and 5? In the previous year papers we studied, Classes 3 and 4 had 35 questions, and Class 5 had 50 questions.
Which topics are most important for ISO Class 3, 4 and 5? The solar system, plants, animals, the human body, food and health, matter and materials, force and energy, and the environment. These appeared in every class.
Are ISO previous year papers enough for preparation? Not on their own. Previous year papers show the real question style, but to score well your child also needs topic-wise practice from a test bank and full mock tests. The Learners package includes all of these. If your child has already finished the workbook, the Power Pro pack is a good add-on: it gives access to 6 previous year papers and 6 mock tests.
How can my child score well in the Achievers Section? This section uses true/false tables, match-the-columns, word grids and multi-part questions. Regular practice with these formats builds both speed and accuracy.
Help your child practise the ISO way
Knowing the pattern is the first step. The next is regular practice with questions that look and feel like the real ISO paper.
SOF Olympiad Trainer was the first in India to launch an Olympiad Intelligent Test Generator, and more than 1.5 million users practise with it. It builds ISO-style tests from a curated Olympiad question bank, topic by topic, so your child gets comfortable with riddles, unscrambles, word grids, Venn diagrams and Achievers Section questions before exam day.
