Tenali Raman: Royal Mother's Last Wish

Tenali Ramakrishna was a witty poet, scholar, thinker and special advisor in the court of King Krishnadevraya of Vijayanagar. Read on one of his famous stories:-
The mother of King Krishnadevaraya was a very religious person. One day she told her son - the king that she would like to offer ripe mangoes to the brahmins. The king immediately ordered his attendants to get mangoes for her. By the time arrangements were made to offer the mangoes to the brahmins, the king's mother died.
The saddened the king very much, but he did not forget his mother's last wish.
On the last day, after the king performed all the necessary religious rites of his mother, he called some brahmins and asked them to suggest a way to fulfil his mother's last wish. The brahmins were very greedy. Taking advantage of the situation they told the king that his mother's soul would find peace only if the king donated mangoes made of gold to them. Next day the king obligingly gave away mangoes made of gold to the greedy brahmins.
When Tenali Raman heard this, he immediately understood the greediness of the brahmins. He decided to teach a lesson to the greedy brahmins. He also invited the brahmins to fulfill the last wish of his mother. The Brahmins happily went to Tenali's house thinking that he too would donate something good to them. When they went inside his house, they found Tenaliram standing with a hot iron bar in his hand. Tenali told them that his mother had died suffering from rheumatism and that she always wished that her legs be burned with the hot rods to ease her pain. So, he wanted to burn the legs of the Brahmins so that his mother's pain would ease and her soul would be able to rest in peace. The Brahmins were shocked and scared. They understood that Tenali had played the trick to teach them a lesson for their greediness. Feeling ashamed, they apologised and returned the gold mangoes to Tenali and fled from there. Tenali returned all the gold mangoes to the King and told him how he had been cheated by the brahmins.
Moral: Watch out! Be on guard against all kinds of greed.
