Why is acceleration due to gravity 'g' is considered negative.

acceleration due to gravity is considered negative only when a body is projected vertically upwards and during free fall it is taken to be positive. The acceleration is towards the center of the earth and therefore provides a retarding force that pulls back the object when it is rising.
