Read the given passages and answer
the question that follow:
Penguins are one of the most fascinating birds on
the planet! Penguins can’t fly, but they’re amazing
swimmers. They like to live in cold places and
are endemic to Antarctica. Even though they are
acclimatized to the cold, some penguins also live
in warmer climates, like Australia, Africa, and the
Galapagos Islands. The largest living species of
penguin is the emperor penguin. The smallest is the
little blue penguin, also known as the fairy penguin.
One of the most amazing things about penguins
is how they waddle! Their short legs make them
wobble from side to side, which is both cute and
funny to watch. But when they are inside the water,
they are not clumsy at all. They are flying.
They are highly adapted to life in the ocean, having
countershaded dark and white plumage and
flippers for swimming. Penguins eat fish, squid,
shrimp, small shrimp-like creatures called krill,
and other forms of sea life, which they catch with
their bills and swallow whole while swimming.
They catch their food underwater, diving deep and
swimming fast with their strong flippers. A penguin
has a spiny tongue and powerful jaws to grip their
slippery prey.
They spend half of their lives on land and half in
the sea. Penguins are great parents, and they are
known to be monogamous and stay with one
partner for a breeding season. The mother and
father penguin both take turns incubating their egg
as well as hunting for food. The father especially,
does something really cool. He stands and protects
the egg from the elements by balancing them on
their feet and covering them with feathered skin
known as the brood. He takes the egg wherever
he goes on the top of his foot. They eat nothing
during the babysitting process. When the baby
penguin hatches, it’s covered in fluffy feathers, and
the parents keep feeding and taking care of it until
it’s ready to explore the world on its own.
