Fill in the blanks with the correct form of the nouns:
There are ___________ fish in the river.

A plenty of
B a large amount of
C both A and B
D none of these

Why option C is incorrect?

It is only A because, B would be senseless if it was used in the sentence........If it was B, the sentence would be constructed in this way: There IS a large amount of fish in the river. NOT There ARE a large amount of fish in the river. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I conclude stating that the second sentence does not make sense according to English. Whereas the first sentence, on the other hand, does. Therefor, the answer is A, not B nor C. Thank you.

Only answer A is correct as fish here is used in the plural sense. Though many people say 'there are a large amount of', it is grammatically incorrect to say that. The correct usage would be,'there is a large amount of'. Therefore the answer would not be B or C.
