FRACTIONS - ESSENTIAL POINTS

  • The fraction is the part of the whole. For instance the red color is shaded in 2 parts out of total 8 parts. Hence fraction of red color shaded is 2/8 = 1/4 .
  • The fraction has a numerator and denominator. For instance in the fraction 2/9, 2 is numerator and 9 is denominator.
  • The proper fractions are the fractions in which numerator is less than the denominator. For instance 4/15 is a proper fraction.
  • The improper fraction are the fraction in which numerator is more than the denominator. 12/7 is a improper fraction.
  • Equivalent fractions are fractions that look different but show exactly the same amount. For example 1/2 and 4/8.
  • It is usually best to show an answer using the simplest fraction ( 1/2 in this case ). That is called Simplifying, or Reducing the Fraction
  • To find an equivalent fraction, multiply or divide the numerator and denominator by the same number. For instance if the fraction 3/5 is multiplied by 4, it would be 12/20.
