FRACTIONS - ESSENTIAL POINTS
- The fraction is a part of the whole.
- A fraction has 2 parts: Numerator and Denominator seperated by dividing lines.
- In the fraction 12/19, the number 12 is numerator and 19 is denominator. In the fraction 21/13,( improper fraction ) the number 21 is numerator and 13 is denominator.
- A whole can be 1 thing and can be divided into equal parts or 1 group of things
- In a box there are 5 red gems, 12 green gems, 3 blue gems and 8 orange gems. The fraction of green gems is 12/28 or 3/7.
- In the figure given the pink color shaded is 2/8 or 1/4. The green color shaded is 1/8. The part not shaded is 3/8
- In the word HARVEST the total letters are seven and the consonants are five which are H, R, V, S and T. Hence the fraction of consonants is 5/7.
- The total fraction shaded is 1/4 + 2/4 + 3/4 = 6/4
- If we multiply 1/6 X 6 then we get one whole.
- The fraction
is equivalent to (7 X 5) + 4 = 39/7. - Equivalent fractions are the fractions that have the same value or represent the same pat of an object.
- The equivalent fractions of 3/4 are 6/8, 12/16, 15/20, 24/32.
- When fraction have the same denominator and different numerator, then the fraction with greater numerator is the greater fraction
- The fraction 4/12 is greater than 3/12.
- Fractions with the same denominators are called like fractions.
- 1/11, 3/11, 8/11, 10/11 are like fractions with the same denominators
- Fractions with different denominators are called unlike fractions.
- 2/3, 4/5, 4/7, 5/8 are unlike fractions with different denominators
- Before adding or subtracting the unlike fraction, change it to like fraction.
- When the numerators are the same and denominators are different, then the denominator with the smaller value is the greater fraction.
- To reduce or simplify a fraction to its lowest term, the numerator and the denominator is divided by their common factor till the two become co-prime.
- In unit fractions the smaller the denominator, the bigger is the fraction.
