DATA HANDLING - ESSENTIAL POINTS

  1. Information collected in the form of the numerical figures in a survey is known as data.
  2. When we represent this data in a figure it is called pictorial representation.
  3. The pictures that represent information are called Pictographs, Bar-graphs etc.
  4. Pictograph is a visual presentation that uses symbols to represent data.
  5. The Bar-graph is the Graphical display of the data , using bars of different heights.
  6. The bars should be of equal width and should be shaded with pencil or colours.
  7. Both the pictograph and the bar-graph should have a tilte.

Examples

  1. The following table shows the number of students present in the first five days of the week.

    1. On Monday 120 students are present. On Wednesday also the same number of students are present, and on Monday and Wednesday the maximum number of students are present.
    2. On Thursday the number of students are present are 20 X 4 + 10 + 10 = 100 students, On Tuesday also the same number of students are present.
    3. On Friday the least number of students are present 20 X 4 + 5 + 5 = 90
  2. The following graph shows the number of vehicles on the road in thousands

    1. 1= thousands
    2. On Monday and Saturday the same number of vehicles are on the road that is 4,000, that is the least number of vehicles.
    3. On Thursday the maximum number of vehicles are on the road that is 32,500, and it is 2,500 more vehicles than the number of vehicles on Friday, which is a little bit more.
    4. On Thursday the number of vehicles are 32,500 and on Wednesday the number of vehicles are 22,500. Hence the difference is of 10,000 vehicles.
    5. The total number of vehicles on the road on all these days are 4,000 + 7,500 + 22,500 + 32,500 + 30,000 + 4,000 = 1,00,500 vehicles.
  3. The following data shows the number of admission in a college in hundreds –

    1. In the month of February and March, the number of admissions are same that is 2,000.
    2. In the month of April, the number of admissions are 3,750.
